You Say Tomaydo, I Say Tohmahtoh: Why Advancement in Diversity and Inclusion Requires Cultural Fluency
presented by Koriambanya (Kori) Carew, Director of Strategic Diversity Initiatives with Shook, Hardy & Bacon

Description: Effective communication skills are not only a necessary component of personal success but also of great leadership. Great leadership requires great communication.  Great communication does not rest solely on the range of your vocabulary, pronunciation, use of grammar, or delivery techniques. The significance of effective communication ranges from the ability to communicate a message to relaying organizational vision and strategy in a way that connects, creates energy and allows for championship. The presenter during this session will be your translator to communicating effectively across differences, whether in interviewing, coaching and giving feedback, before an executive committee or board, while working with clients, or in personal relationships. Bottom line: when you say “tomaydo” and someone else says “tohmahtoh,” you may not be having the same conversation….!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize when cultural differences are at play
  2. Have a framework to adapt to various circumstances
  3. Assess their leadership and communication style across differences
  4. Have a more effective framework toward communicating and leading across differences
  5. A framework to help us be more effective as we coach, mentor, and develop professionals in our organizations.
