SESSION DESCRIPTION
This presentation overviews what law firms and their attorneys should know about common pitfalls for attorneys, including substance use and mental health disorders.  It looks at common difficulties for fitness and covers ethical issues by discussing all reporting rules, Section 467 of Health and Safety Code confidentiality, ethical duty and obligations, Rule 8.03 of the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, and tips to maintain wellness and remain fit to practice pursuant to these ethical rules as a lawyer.  It also overviews common government lawyer pitfalls, symptoms and signs of the mental health and substance use disorders affecting lawyers’ fitness, how to identify impaired lawyers, and ethical duties to report a person of concern to discipline or to contact TLAP.  It also discusses suicide prevention, ethical and wellness tips, resources available for help, and strategies for dealing with stress and burnout.


CLM® Application Credit for Functional Specialists: 1 hour in the subject area of Human Resources Management (HR) toward the additional hours required of some Functional Specialists to fulfill the CLM application. 
CLM® Recertification Credit: 1 hour in the subject area of Human Resources Management (HR). This session also satisfies the 1 hour required in Substance Abuse.
